Under reply I am to add, that the Honorable the Chief Magistrate has received authority to enrol the Volunteers in the Police of the Colony from the day they made available for that service, and to draw for their Extra Pay (as Policemen) from that date. Major Caine has likewise been requested to give Captain Bruce (the Acting Superintendent of Police) such immediate subsidiary instructions as to the employment, lodging of the Policemen and their families &c, &c, as may be required, and to submit to Government any further suggestions that his local experience may enable him to do for giving the fullest effect to arrangements that have been decided on.
Copies of this letter and of those from you to which it is a reply will be forwarded by the first opportunity to Her Majesty's Government.
